We do get to see the gloves come off though with Zendaya dropping bombs in her revelations. She says

You know what Malcolm? I feel like once you know someone is there for you and once you know they love you. You never actually think of them again. It’s not until you are about to lose someone that you finally pay attention.

A powerful moment in the trailer that Zendaya delivers with a perfect balance of reserved emotion and a bit of disdain. All while the viewer tries to construe exactly why they having this conversation on their big night. The trailer then reminds you that you’re not watching a love story but rather the story of love.
